Let's Bring the Recliner Back

ce of an interior designer

Scarlett J Designs is a a boutique Sarasota interior design studio delivering elevated interiors, bold brand styling, and curated special events for busy professionals and families who want impact without the overwhelm.

When you’re building or renovating a home, you’ve probably been told you need three things: an architect, a contractor, and maybe a designer if there’s budget left.

But here’s the reality: A beautiful, functional home isn’t just built — it’s designed with intention. And that’s where your interior designer comes in. Let’s break it down so you can build smarter, not just bigger.

1. The Architect, Contractor & Designer: Who Does What?

Think of your dream home like a symphony — each player is critical, but they play different instruments.

👷‍♂️ The Architect:

  • Reviews the project from the outside in
  • Designs structurally sound spaces
  • Follows local building codes

They make sure the house stands up — literally. But they’re not focused on how your kitchen flows or where your laundry baskets go.

🪑 The Designer:

  • Sees the project from the inside out
  • Focuses on function, lifestyle, and livability
  • Customizes every space to your daily rhythm

We ask: Does the kitchen island feel intuitive? Is there enough mudroom storage? Does this layout help or hinder your mornings?

🔨 The Contractor:

  • Executes the plan
  • Works with materials, timelines, trades, and permits
  • Doesn’t make design decisions — just builds what’s on the plan

Without the right design, they’re building a house that might not live well.

2. Why Interior Design Isn’t Just ‘Decorating’

One of the biggest misconceptions? That designers just pick pillows and paint.

In reality, a designer:

  • Reviews architectural plans for functionality
  • Identifies layout issues before it’s too late (like poorly placed doors, awkward bathrooms, or blocked sightlines)
  • Creates a cohesive, livable interior — not just a pretty one

As shown in the example above, even well-drawn plans can miss critical layout issues — a designer’s eye is what connects the technical with the personal.

3. Red-Lining = Your Secret Weapon

In every build or remodel, plans change. That’s a fact.

Red-lining — or reviewing and marking up plans each time they’re revised — is what ensures:

  • Nothing gets overlooked
  • Your layout stays aligned with your real life needs
  • The project evolves intentionally, not reactively

A good designer is your quality control. We catch the gaps before they become expensive change orders.

4. The Result? A Home That Works Like You Live There (Not Like a Blueprint Says You Should)

Because when design is done right, you’ll never:

  • Bump into your kitchen island when opening the fridge
  • Regret not adding a plug by the coffee station
  • Wonder why the hallway feels weirdly dark

Instead, you’ll feel like every inch of your home was made just for you — because it was.

💡 Final Thought:

You can have the most experienced architect and contractor in the game — but without a designer, your home is just a structure.
Design is what makes it yours.
It’s what turns “a house” into your dream home.
