When most people think about remodeling their home, they picture beautiful kitchens, stunning bathrooms, custom cabinetry, and carefully selected finishes.
But before we ever choose a paint color or design a floor plan, we ask a much more important question:
What’s actually possible?
At Scarlett J Designs, one of the first steps in every major Sarasota home renovation is conducting a thorough feasibility study with trusted general contractors and engineers. It’s a step that often goes unseen, but it’s one of the most important investments you can make before beginning any remodel.
Recently, we began planning the renovation of a beautiful 1950s Sarasota home. Like many older homes, it had incredible character—but also decades of construction methods, structural quirks, and hidden surprises waiting behind the walls.
Before beginning design, we walked the home with multiple licensed general contractors to evaluate everything from structural framing and plumbing locations to HVAC systems, windows, and construction feasibility.
Together, we discussed questions like:
These conversations provide the foundation for every design decision that follows.
One of the biggest misconceptions about home remodeling is that design happens first and construction figures itself out later.
In reality, the best renovations are highly collaborative from the beginning.
By partnering with experienced contractors early in the process, we’re able to:
This collaborative approach allows us to spend our clients’ investment wisely while minimizing unnecessary revisions during construction.
One of the things both contractors emphasized during our recent feasibility meetings was that many of the biggest decisions simply can’t be made until portions of the home are opened up.
That’s completely normal—especially in older homes.
Rather than making assumptions, we build flexibility into our design process. We identify areas that require additional investigation, collaborate with structural engineers when needed, and create design solutions that can adapt once construction begins.
It’s a smarter, more strategic approach that ultimately leads to a smoother renovation experience.
As a Sarasota interior designer, our role extends far beyond selecting furniture and finishes.
We believe exceptional design is equal parts creativity, planning, and collaboration.
That’s why we work closely with homeowners, contractors, engineers, and trusted trade professionals from the very beginning of every project. Our goal is to create a seamless experience where every decision is intentional, every detail has been thoughtfully considered, and every design is grounded in what’s both beautiful and achievable.
Whether we’re transforming a historic Sarasota home, reimagining a kitchen, or renovating an entire residence, thoughtful planning is what allows exceptional design to come to life.
If you’re considering a Sarasota home renovation or whole-home remodel, don’t start with finishes.
Start with a plan.
A feasibility study gives you the clarity to understand what’s possible, where to invest, and how to move forward with confidence—long before construction begins.
Because the best renovations don’t happen by chance.
They begin with asking the right questions.
