The Most Expensive Design Decisions Are Often the Ones That Look the Smallest

When people think about the big decisions involved in a renovation, they usually think about cabinetry, flooring, countertops and furniture. But some of the decisions that have the biggest impact on the finished home are much smaller.
Where does that outlet go? What color is the grout? Where does the backsplash stop? How high should the sconces be installed? What happens where two materials meet?
Individually, these decisions can feel insignificant. Together, they’re often the difference between a home that simply has beautiful materials and one that feels exceptionally well designed.
The Decisions Aren’t Difficult. The Timing Is.
One of the biggest misconceptions about working with an interior designer is that our job is primarily to help clients choose beautiful things. Of course, that’s part of it. But an equally important part of our job is knowing which decisions need to be made and when.
A faucet selection can affect countertop fabrication. A vanity design determines electrical placement. The thickness of a countertop can change how another material terminates. A decorative light fixture may require blocking before drywall goes up.
By the time something looks like a problem, the easiest opportunity to solve it may have already passed. That’s why good design requires looking several decisions ahead.
“We Can Figure That Out Later” Can Get Expensive
There are certainly decisions that can wait. Others can’t. When we’re developing a renovation at Scarlett J Designs, we’re constantly thinking about what the contractor, fabricator, electrician, plumber or installer will eventually need to know. It’s not because we want to make every decision at once. It’s because we want to make each decision at the point when we still have the most options. Changing something on a drawing is easy. Changing it after tile has been installed is not.
The Details Nobody Notices Are Often the Ones We’ve Thought About Most
Some of my favorite design details are the ones a client may never consciously notice. The outlet that disappears instead of interrupting a beautiful backsplash. The shower drain that doesn’t break up the tile pattern. Sconces that are perfectly positioned. The transition between two materials that looks completely intentional. Hardware placement that simply feels right. Nobody walks into the room and says, “Wow, look at that outlet placement.” When those decisions are handled correctly, your eye isn’t drawn to a problem. You simply experience a room that feels considered, cohesive and finished.
That’s Where a Designer Earns Their Seat at the Table
Beautiful selections matter, but design isn’t simply a collection of beautiful selections. It’s understanding how hundreds of individual decisions interact, anticipating what comes next and making those decisions in an order that protects the bigger vision. It’s also one of the reasons we believe involving your designer early in a renovation can make such a difference. The earlier we can think through those details, the more opportunities we have to solve problems before they become expensive ones.
Because ultimately, the goal isn’t to make more decisions. It’s to make the right ones, once.
