Ciao!

White paint colors

Scarlett J Designs is a a boutique Sarasota interior design studio delivering elevated interiors, bold brand styling, and curated special events for busy professionals and families who want impact without the overwhelm.

Let’s be honest—choosing a paint color should be fun. But between the endless shades of white and the 47 versions of “greige,” it can quickly go from exciting to overwhelming. I get it. You want a home that feels elevated and cohesive, not like a patchwork of Pinterest regrets.

So how do you choose a color that actually works for your space (and doesn’t leave you questioning every decision you’ve ever made)? Here’s how I help clients get it right the first time:

1. Start With the Feeling, Not the Fan Deck

Instead of diving into swatches, ask yourself: How do I want this room to feel? Cozy and moody? Light and airy? Energized? Grounded? Let the vibe lead the vision. Color has emotional weight—and the right tone sets the entire mood of your space.

2. Look at the Light

Natural light makes or breaks a color. North-facing rooms read cooler, while south-facing rooms bring warmth. Test swatches in different parts of the room and at different times of day. What looks like a soft beige at 9 AM might scream yellow by 4 PM.

3. Don’t Fight the Fixed Elements

If you’re not changing your flooring, tile, or major furniture, make sure your paint works with what’s staying. Pull tones from your existing pieces—your favorite rug, a beautiful countertop, or even the undertone of your wood floors.

4. Yes, You Still Need to Sample

I don’t care how good your eye is—sample it. On your walls. In large swatches. Multiple spots. It’s worth the $7 to avoid a $700 regret. (And no, painting 10 shades of white on the wall is not a vibe. Narrow it down first.) Sampelize.com is one of my favorites sites to test out paint colors – you order directly from them, and when it arrives you can stick it on the wall like a peel-and-stick! Beats the mess and you can leave it up throughout different times of day!

5. When in Doubt, Call in a Pro

If you’re stuck between “Cloud White” and “White Dove” and your eyeballs are bleeding—that’s your cue to call me. I help clients choose timeless, tone-perfect palettes that reflect their style and work with their space. No stress, just a beautiful result.

Ready to pick your perfect palette? Book a strategy session and let’s take the guesswork out of your walls. Because a color that feels right makes the whole space sing.
