As a designer—and a mom—I’m always thinking about how our environments affect the people who live in them. That goes beyond aesthetics and deep into the materials we surround ourselves with every day. So when this recent article from The Guardian crossed my desk, it stopped me in my tracks:

👉 “Children’s mattresses found to contain toxic chemicals, research shows” – The Guardian

The short version? A new study found that many mattresses marketed for babies and kids contain harmful chemicals linked to respiratory issues, hormone disruption, and even cancer. Yes—even the ones labeled “green” or “non-toxic.”

These chemicals come from flame retardants, PVCs, and other synthetics often found in mainstream crib and twin mattresses. And worse, the research shows kids are especially vulnerable because of their size, development stage, and the fact that they spend so many hours sleeping directly on these surfaces.

So what can you do?

Here’s what I recommend to clients who want safer sleep spaces for their kids (or themselves!):

  1. Look for GOLS or GOTS Certifications
These standards ensure the materials used (like natural latex or organic cotton) meet strict environmental and health criteria.
  2. Avoid Foam When Possible
Especially polyurethane foam, which tends to off-gas VOCs and often includes chemical flame retardants.
  3. Research the Brand—Not Just the Label
“Non-toxic” and “green” are unregulated marketing terms. Dig deeper into what’s actually in the mattress.
  4. Work With Someone Who’s Done the Research
(Hi, it’s me 🙋‍♀️) I help my clients source cleaner, safer pieces for their homes—including furniture, textiles, and yes, mattresses—so they don’t have to spend hours decoding ingredient lists.

If you’re designing or updating your child’s room—or just want peace of mind about what they’re sleeping on—I’ve got you. There are beautiful, design-forward options out there that won’t compromise your child’s health or your home’s style.

Have questions about sourcing healthier furnishings? Let’s talk. Your home should support your family’s well-being in every way.
