Paint seems simple — pick a color, grab a brush, and you’re done… right? Not so fast. The truth is, paint is one of the most transformative and tricky design choices you’ll make. The wrong undertone, sheen, or placement can completely change how a room feels — and not in a good way. Before you head to the paint store (or worse, slap a gallon on the wall and regret it later), here are 5 smart questions to ask yourself that will save time, money, and plenty of frustration.
What is the room’s purpose? In spaces that see a lot of action — think kitchens, bathrooms, and busy hallways — a satin or semi-gloss finish is your friend because it stands up to cleaning and daily wear. For quieter rooms like bedrooms or dining areas, a flat or eggshell sheen creates a softer, more elegant vibe.
What lighting does the room get? Natural light can be unforgiving, often showing every bump and flaw on a wall. Choosing a matte or eggshell finish helps soften those imperfections. On the flip side, if you’re working with a dim room, a semi-gloss or gloss finish will bounce light around and instantly brighten the space.
How frequent do you need to clean the surface? Certain spaces demand more resilience. Kitchens, playrooms, or any area that sees sticky fingers and spills will benefit from satin, semi-gloss, or even high-gloss finishes. These options are easier to wipe down and can handle regular cleaning without losing their shine.
What is the surface condition of the wall? Not every wall is perfectly smooth — and that’s okay. Just know that glossy finishes will call attention to every dent and uneven spot. If your walls have some character (aka flaws), stick with flat or eggshell finishes, which do a much better job of disguising them.
What is your aesthetic preference? At the end of the day, it comes down to the mood you want. Matte and eggshell finishes give a soft, elegant feel, perfect for a cozy or classic space. If you’re chasing that sleek, modern edge, semi-gloss or high-gloss adds a polished, high-impact finish to your walls.
Now that you’ve answered those questions, here is a quick reference sheet on paint sheets and finishes:
Paint sheen = how shiny the paint looks + how tough it is against wear and tear. Here’s a quick breakdown of your options:
Flat / Matte → No shine, smooth and velvety. Best for ceilings or low-traffic spaces. Great at hiding flaws, but not very scrubbable.
Eggshell → Soft, subtle glow. More durable than flat, easy to clean. Perfect for bedrooms and living rooms.
Satin → Gentle sheen with strong durability. A go-to for high-traffic spots like kitchens, baths, and hallways. Wipes down easily.
Semi-Gloss → Noticeable shine. Stands up to moisture and heavy use, ideal for trim, doors, and cabinets.
High-Gloss → Ultra-reflective and highly durable. Great for furniture, accents, or statement details — but shows imperfections.
