What You Need to Know (Before You Regret That “Trendy” Slab in Two Years)
You’re about to remodel. You’ve got big design dreams, a Pinterest board that slaps… and no idea what the hell the difference is between quartz and quartzite. Welcome to the jungle.
Here’s your no-BS guide to countertop and surface materials — what they are, why they matter, and how to pick the one that won’t betray you six months in. Let’s make sure your remodel looks intentional, not like a fever dream from HGTV circa 2011.
Material Breakdown
Granite : The OG Natural Stone Queen
What it is: Straight from the earth, baby. Each slab is a one-of-a-kind stunner.
Why we love it: Heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, basically bulletproof.
The catch: Needs sealing. Can be a little extra in terms of color and veining.
Best for: Kitchens that actually get used. Outdoor BBQ zones. Real-life mess.
ScarJ take: A classic that never gets tired if you pick the right slab. Stay away from weird speckled ones unless you’re into ’90s vibes.
Quartz : Low-Maintenance, High-Style Energy
What it is: Crushed natural quartz + resin = the perfectionist’s dream.
Why we love it: No sealing, easy to clean, a million color options.
The catch: Not a fan of heat. Can chip on the edges.
Best for: Busy families, neat freaks, and anyone allergic to “high maintenance.”
ScarJ take: Want it to look like marble but not cry every time someone uses a lemon? This is your girl.
Quartzite : The “I Bet You Didn’t Know This Wasn’t Marble” One
What it is: A natural stone that’s stronger than your espresso.
Why we love it: Durable, beautiful, and more heat-tolerant than quartz.
The catch: Needs sealing. Some slabs etch (depends on the source).
Best for: High-end kitchens, statement islands, show-offs.
ScarJ take: It’s like marble’s older, wiser sister who lifts weights and drinks mezcal.
Marble : Glam, Gorgeous, And Slightly High-Maintenance (Same)
What it is: Natural stone with iconic veining and timeless drama.
Why we love it: Nothing — and I mean nothing — looks like real marble.
The catch: Scratches, etches, and stains if you even look at it the wrong way.
Best for: Bathrooms, fireplaces, grown-up zones where red wine isn’t sloshing.
ScarJ take: If you’re messy, go faux. If you’re elegant and disciplined… marble’s your soulmate.
Porcelain Slabs : Durability Meets European Cool Girl Energy
What it is: Super‑fired clay that can look like literally anything.
Why we love it: Heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, low-maintenance, ultra-modern.
The catch: Can chip on the edges. Install is tricky (you want a pro).
Best for: Floors, bathrooms, backsplashes, sleek kitchens.
ScarJ take: It’s giving fashion-week-in-Milan. If you want clean lines and high style, you’ll fall hard.
Soapstone : Moody, Matte, and Doesn’t Care What You Think
What it is: A soft natural stone with major old-world vibes.
Why we love it: Doesn’t stain, can handle heat, develops a patina over time.
The catch: Soft — it scratches. But honestly, that’s part of the charm.
Best for: Rustic kitchens, masculine spaces, design-forward folks.
ScarJ take: It’s like a vintage leather jacket — better with age, and full of stories.
Butcher Block : Warm, Wholesome, And Will Make You Want to Bake Bread
What it is: Slabs of real wood, sealed or oiled.
Why we love it: Natural, warm, can be refinished.
The catch: High-maintenance, water-sensitive, can stain or warp.
Best for: Islands, cozy kitchens, or aesthetic pantry counters.
ScarJ take: Treat her right and she’ll love you back. Abuse her, and she’ll show it.
Real Talk: How to Choose
Don’t pick based on trends alone — pick what works for your life.
Ask yourself:
How messy is your household? (No judgment.)
Are you going to cry if something stains?
Do you cook a lot, or just reheat things in the microwave?
Are you in this home for 2 years or 20?
Design is emotional — but material choices should be logical. I’ll help you find the perfect combo of beauty, function, and durability without the design drama. Let’s build a home that looks incredible and works with your actual life.
