Ciao!

How a few strategic renovation updates brought new texture, warmth, and function to this Siesta Key home.

Not every home needs a major remodel to feel dramatically different. Sometimes, it’s about knowing exactly where to make a change—and where to leave well enough alone.

For this Siesta Key home, the goal wasn’t to reinvent the house. Instead, we focused on a handful of strategic updates that would have the greatest visual impact: replacing dated carpet with large format floor tile in several rooms of the home, introduced dimensional wall tile in the bathroom, and transforming the home office into a more polished backdrop for both the room and the homeowner’s daily Zoom calls.

The scope was relatively contained. The impact wasn’t.

Updating the Foundation

One of the most effective ways to change the way an existing home feels is through flooring.

The previous carpet was beginning to date the interiors, so replacing it gave us an opportunity to create a lighter, quieter foundation without disrupting everything else the homeowners already loved. The new tile works with the home’s abundant natural light and creates a neutral backdrop for the existing furnishings with the coastal vibe the owners were looking for.

This is something we consider carefully when planning home renovations in Siesta Key and Sarasota. A new material shouldn’t just look beautiful on a sample board. It needs to work with the architecture, existing finishes, natural light, furnishings, and the way the home is actually lived in.

Giving a Small Bathroom More Dimension

The bathroom didn’t need to be gutted to make it more interesting. Instead, we focused on the walls. A dimensional neutral tile adds subtle horizontal movement throughout the space, allowing light and shadow to become part of the design. The color is restrained, but the texture gives the room considerably more depth.

It’s one of our favorite design principles: When you’re working with a neutral palette, texture becomes your pattern.

Rather than competing with the existing vanity, countertop, mirror, and fixtures, the new wall treatment makes those elements feel more intentional within the finished room.

And Then There Was the Zoom Background

The Before

The office presented a very 2026 design problem:
The room needed to look good in person—but it also needed to look good through a camera.

The wall behind the desk was going to be visible during meetings and video calls, which meant we started thinking about it almost like another elevation in the room. Rather than creating an overly styled “Zoom wall,” we used dimensional tile to give the background quiet architectural interest.

The homeowner had built the floating shelves himself, so keeping them was important. Rather than replacing them in the name of a completely new look, we designed around them—preserving something personal while giving the wall a more polished, intentional backdrop.

The bigger challenge was everything an office needs that you don’t necessarily want showing up on a Zoom call. We sourced the dark wood console specifically to provide concealed storage for the everyday office clutter, while complementing the existing shelves and grounding the lighter dimensional tile.

The result feels collected rather than staged: personal pieces remain part of the story, the practical necessities are tucked away, and the entire wall works just as well on camera as it does in person.

Designing Around What You Already Own

Perhaps the most important part of this project was what we didn’t change. The office already contained substantial furniture and personal pieces that belonged in the home. Rather than automatically replacing them, we changed the environment around them. That’s an important distinction.

Good interior design isn’t about convincing a homeowner that everything they own needs to go. Sometimes a new material, better backdrop, updated flooring, or more intentional styling is enough to make existing pieces feel completely different. It’s also why smaller renovation projects benefit from having a larger design vision. Every decision still needs to relate to what stays.

Small Renovation. Significant Difference.

It’s easy to associate transformation with major construction. But sometimes the smartest investment is much more targeted. For this Siesta Key home refresh, new flooring, thoughtfully selected wall finishes, and updated storage were enough to shift the character of several spaces without undertaking an unnecessary whole-home remodel.

The home still feels like their home. It simply feels more current, more textured, and more considered. And ultimately, that’s the point. A successful renovation isn’t measured by how much you changed. It’s measured by whether you changed the right things.

Considering Updates to Your Siesta Key Home?

You don’t necessarily need a whole-home renovation to make your interiors feel new again.

At Scarlett J Designs, we help homeowners identify where thoughtful design changes can have the greatest impact—whether that means new finishes and flooring, an updated bathroom, a better-functioning home office, furnishings and styling, or a more extensive renovation.

The scope should fit the home. And the design should make every decision feel intentional.
