Christmas Styling Tips: Where to Splurge and Where to Save for a Beautifully Layered Holiday Home

The secret to a beautifully decorated Christmas isn’t spending more on everything. It’s knowing where to invest.
In our Sarasota interior design studio, one of our favorite ways to create a beautifully layered home is by mixing high and low. We might invest in a statement piece of furniture and pair it with an unexpected budget-friendly find. It’s that thoughtful combination of textures, finishes, and price points that makes a space feel collected, interesting, and personal.
And when it comes to holiday styling? We follow the exact same philosophy.
As a Sarasota holiday interior designer, I’m often asked what makes a professionally styled Christmas tree or holiday installation look so polished. The answer isn’t necessarily a bigger budget. It’s knowing where to splurge, where to save, and how to layer everything together.
At Scarlett J Designs, we believe the magic is in the mix. Here’s our guide to creating a beautifully styled holiday home without spending top dollar on every ornament, garland, or accessory.
Where to Save on Christmas Decorations
Think of these pieces as the supporting cast. They build volume, establish your color palette, and create the foundation for those special details that make the design shine.
Base Garland
Here’s one of our favorite professional holiday decorating tricks: start with affordable garland. When we’re creating lush holiday mantels, staircases, or console arrangements, we often use basic greenery as the foundation. It provides the fullness we need before layering in premium, more realistic greenery.
The result? A beautifully full installation without paying premium prices for every inch of garland.
Basic Christmas Shatterproof Ball Ornaments
Never underestimate the power of a simple Christmas ball ornament! We use these by the dozens to establish a cohesive color palette, fill gaps, and create depth throughout the tree. Whether we’re decorating with traditional reds and greens, rich jewel tones, or soft neutrals, affordable ball ornaments are essential to building a full, beautifully layered Christmas tree.
Christmas Tree Picks and Sprays
Not every decorative pick needs to be expensive. Budget-friendly branches, berries, and sprays add volume, texture, and dimension throughout a tree. They’re especially helpful for filling gaps and creating movement between larger statement ornaments. We love mixing these foundational pieces with more distinctive accents for a custom look.
Small Holiday Accents
Some of our favorite holiday styling moments come from inexpensive finds. Small tabletop accessories, decorative objects, and seasonal accents can be mixed into existing bookshelves, consoles, and coffee table arrangements. It’s not about the price tag. It’s about how everything works together. We love scouring local boutiques for these over the holiday season.
Where to Splurge on Christmas Decorations
These are the holiday decorating investments that make the biggest visual difference. They’re the pieces that elevate the overall design and often become favorites you bring out year after year.
Real-Touch Holiday Florals
If there’s one category where quality makes an immediate difference, it’s faux florals. Beautifully crafted real-touch magnolias, poinsettias, and seasonal botanicals bring incredible texture, realism, and richness to holiday arrangements. We especially love incorporating premium florals into Christmas trees, mantels, and statement arrangements throughout the home.
Real-Touch Garland for the Top Layer
Remember that affordable base garland? This is where the magic happens. We layer premium real-touch greenery over the foundation, creating a lush, dimensional installation that looks natural and abundant. It’s one of our favorite high-low holiday decorating techniques because it delivers maximum visual impact while keeping the overall investment intentional.
Statement Christmas Ornaments
These are the showstoppers. Oversized ornaments, unusual shapes, beautiful finishes, and specialty pieces give your Christmas tree personality and depth. The trick is mixing them with your basic ball ornaments rather than filling the entire tree with expensive decorations. A few carefully selected statement pieces can completely transform the overall look and make it personal to your family.
Beautiful Ribbon. Always.
We have strong feelings about Christmas ribbon! Quality wired ribbon holds its shape, creates beautiful movement, and adds a polished finishing touch to trees, wreaths, and garlands. Whether we’re working with rich velvet, luxurious satin, or beautifully textured ribbon, this is one area where we believe investing in quality pays off. Good ribbon can make even the simplest decorations feel special.
A Beautiful Christmas Tree Collar or Skirt
The base of your Christmas tree deserves just as much attention as the top. A tailored tree skirt or substantial tree collar creates a finished look and helps connect your Christmas tree to the rest of the room’s design. It’s one of those details that can easily be overlooked but makes a noticeable difference.
A Statement Tree Topper
Think of your Christmas tree topper as the final accessory. Whether it’s an oversized bow, sculptural star, or custom arrangement of florals and decorative picks, your topper should complement the overall design. We love creating tree toppers that feel intentional, dimensional, and just a little unexpected.
Where We Mix High and Low: Decorative Vases and Vessels
Here’s where we break all the rules. Sometimes the perfect finishing touch is a gorgeous statement vase from a high-end design showroom. Other times? It’s a fabulous find from H&M Home. And we love both.
When styling holiday florals, branches, and greenery, what matters most is the shape, scale, texture, and finish of the vessel. A beautiful arrangement doesn’t always require an expensive vase, and a statement vessel doesn’t always need an elaborate arrangement. It’s about balance, proportion, and knowing when to let something shine.
The Secret to Professional Christmas Decorating
When you walk into a beautifully decorated home during the holidays, you’re not necessarily looking at hundreds of expensive individual pieces. You’re seeing thoughtful layers.
Affordable ornaments that create fullness. Premium accents that catch the eye. Basic greenery that builds volume. Realistic florals that add richness. Beautiful ribbon that ties everything together. It’s the combination that creates the magic.
And knowing how to bring all those elements together is where a professional holiday designer’s eye makes all the difference.
At Scarlett J Designs, we approach holiday styling with the same philosophy we bring to our residential interior design projects: thoughtful selections, beautiful materials, intentional layering, and an eye for the details that make a space feel complete.
Because a memorable Christmas isn’t about spending more on everything. It’s about spending thoughtfully on the things that matter.
