Let's Bring the Recliner Back

Scarlett J Designs is a a boutique Sarasota interior design studio delivering elevated interiors, bold brand styling, and curated special events for busy professionals and families who want impact without the overwhelm.

Whether you’re redesigning one room or tackling the whole house, starting a home design project is exciting — but let’s be honest, it can also feel like a lot. The smartest way to set yourself up for success? Ask the right questions before you start. These 10 questions will help you get clear on your goals, avoid costly missteps, and make sure your space ends up looking (and working) exactly how you want it to.

1. What’s not working in my current space?

Before you start dreaming about paint colors and new furniture, get brutally honest about what’s driving you nuts. Is it clutter? Lack of storage? Awkward layouts? This helps us solve real problems — not just make things look pretty.

2. How do I want to use this space?

Function comes first — especially for busy families or work-from-home professionals. Are you entertaining? Working? Relaxing? All of the above? Design without a clear purpose leads to regrets (and wasted $$$).

3. What’s my realistic timeline?

Are you hoping to finish by the holidays? Before baby arrives? Or is this more of a “when it’s done, it’s done” vibe? Timelines affect everything from sourcing to scheduling trades.

4. What’s my total budget — and is there wiggle room?

Knowing your budget upfront allows your designer to make smart, strategic decisions (and prioritize splurges vs. saves). Also: don’t forget the soft costs like shipping, labor, or custom installs.

5. Am I willing to live through a mess, or should we phase the project?

Some clients are ready to rip the Band-Aid off and do it all at once. Others want to tackle it in stages. Knowing your tolerance for disruption helps shape the project scope.

6. What styles, colors, or vibes am I naturally drawn to?

You don’t need a full mood board, but having a general idea of what speaks to you is helpful. Pinterest boards, saved IG posts, or even a “things I hate” list gives your designer a clear visual starting point.

7. Are there any non-negotiables I should communicate upfront?

That could be keeping grandma’s antique buffet, needing blackout curtains for night shifts, or hiding every single toy in 0.3 seconds when guests arrive. Your life matters in your design.

8. What level of involvement do I want in the process?

Some clients want to be hands-on with every choice. Others want a “just tell me when it’s done” experience. There’s no right answer — but clarity saves everyone time and stress.

9. Who else needs to weigh in on decisions?

Spouse? Kids? Business partner? Knowing this upfront avoids design delays (and domestic debates) down the road.

10. What does success look like for me at the end of this project?

Is it a space that finally reflects your style? Less clutter? A calm retreat at the end of a chaotic day? Keeping your why at the center of the process leads to a result that feels right — not just looks right.

When you ask the right questions, you don’t just get a pretty space — you get a home that works for you. Ready to stop second-guessing and start designing? Let’s talk about how we can bring your vision to life (with zero overwhelm).
