Scarlett J Designs at Atlanta market

Scarlett J Designs is a a boutique Sarasota interior design studio delivering elevated interiors, bold brand styling, and curated special events for busy professionals and families who want impact without the overwhelm.

Clients often ask why interior designers source furniture and décor from Atlanta, Las Vegas, or Dallas Market rather than purchasing everything from Restoration Hardware (RH), Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, etc.

RH and others are beautiful. It’s familiar. And it absolutely has its place.

But Market sourcing offers something retail simply can’t: control, customization, and long-term value.

Here’s what that really means.

What “Market” Means in Interior Design

Design markets are trade-only events where designers source directly from manufacturers. These vendors don’t sell to the public and specialize in made-to-order pieces rather than mass-produced collections.

Market sourcing allows designers to:

  • Customize dimensions, finishes, and fabrics
  • Specify higher-quality construction
  • Control scale and proportions precisely
  • Access trade pricing
  • Create pieces tailored to a specific home—not a catalog
  • Furnish a home with goods that can’t be found at retail – making it exclusively yours

Traditional Retail vs. Market: The Real Difference

Let’s take RH as an example. RH is a luxury retailer, not a manufacturer.

What RH does well:

  • Strong, recognizable aesthetic
  • Generous scale that photographs beautifully
  • Consistent styling across collections

Limitations designers see:

  • Limited true customization
  • Engineered materials on many pieces
  • Very high MSRP for the construction level

RH works well when the standard sizes and finishes happen to fit the space—but there’s little flexibility when they don’t.

Market Vendors

Market vendors are manufacturers first.

That means:

  • Solid hardwood frames
  • Higher-density foams and better suspension systems
  • Custom dimensions, finishes, and leg styles
  • Pieces designed to last 10–20+ years

This level of control is critical when designing homes where proportions, comfort, and longevity matter.

How Pricing Actually Compares

Many clients assume Market sourcing is more expensive. In reality, that’s often not the case.

Comparable sofa pricing (after designer markup):

  • RH: $7,000–$9,000
  • Market (Trade): $4,500–$6,000

Market-sourced pieces frequently land below RH pricing while offering better materials, customization, and durability.

Why RH Isn’t at Market

RH designs in-house and private-labels its manufacturing. They don’t exhibit at Market and don’t sell wholesale to designers.

However, many Market vendors:

  • Use the same or better factories
  • Offer similar silhouettes with improved construction
  • Provide customization RH doesn’t allow

Market sourcing isn’t about copying RH—it’s about doing it better.

Why Designers Don’t Just “Pass Along” Trade Pricing

Trade pricing isn’t a sale—it’s access.

Designers manage:

  • Procurement and ordering
  • Freight, receiving, and inspection
  • Damage claims and replacements
  • Lead times, delays, and logistics

Clients aren’t just buying a piece—they’re investing in a seamless, protected process.

The Bottom Line

Retail offers convenience and consistency.

Market sourcing offers precision and longevity.

When a designer sources from Market, it’s not about buying more—it’s about buying right, for your home, your lifestyle, and the long term.
