Let’s be real: your pets live in your house just as much as you do. And if you’re anything like my clients, they rule the roost (with muddy paws, hair tumbleweeds, and chew toys everywhere to prove it).
But having pets doesn’t mean sacrificing good design. With a little intention, you can have a beautiful, pulled-together home and one that works for your four-legged family members.
Here’s how to design with pets in mind—without giving up your aesthetic:
Think Crypton, Sunbrella, or other high-performance options for sofas, chairs, and benches. They repel stains, resist odors, and clean up like a dream—without looking like patio furniture.
Skip silk or shag. Instead, go for low-pile, patterned rugs that hide fur and clean easily. Flat-weaves, indoor/outdoor styles, or vintage rugs with a little wear already baked in are both pet-proof and pretty.
Designate a spot for feeding stations, crates, or pet beds. Built-in nooks in mudrooms or laundry rooms make it look intentional—not like a pile of bowls shoved in a corner. Bonus: storage for leashes, toys, and treats right where you need them.
Hardwood is beautiful but can scratch easily. Try durable options like luxury vinyl plank, sealed concrete, or porcelain tile that mimic the look of wood with a lot more toughness.
Opt for satin or semi-gloss paint in high-traffic areas (read: where wagging tails leave dirt trails). And if you’ve got a drooler or a jumper, consider washable wall coverings or tile wainscoting for style and practicality.
Velvet + white + pets = heartbreak. Unless you’re committed to constant cleaning (or a very well-behaved pup), steer clear of fabrics and finishes that show every paw print.
Choose furniture with legs so fur doesn’t collect underneath, and storage baskets with lids to hide toys when guests come over. Elevated feeders can even match your cabinetry for a seamless look.
At the end of the day, your home should function for how you actually live. If that means creating a window perch for your cat or carving out space for your golden retriever’s throne of a bed—it’s worth doing right.
Bottom line: You don’t have to choose between a gorgeous space and a pet-friendly one. With smart material choices, intentional zones, and a little planning, you can have both.
Your home can look like you live there—not just your dog.
