Let's Bring the Recliner Back

Let’s be honest — we’re all busy, overbooked, and running on vibes and caffeine. But the truth is: you can’t fake good sleep. It’s the real secret to feeling sharp, grounded, and like the best version of you. And guess what? The way your bedroom is designed plays a bigger role in your sleep quality than you might think.

At Scarlett J Designs, we don’t just make things look good — we make them work beautifully. And nowhere is that more important than in the bedroom. This is the space where you rest, recharge, and reset. It should be calm, intentional, and feel like a soft exhale the minute you walk in. If your bedroom isn’t helping you sleep better, then babe… it’s time for a glow-up.

From lighting to layout, textiles to tone — design choices impact how your nervous system responds. Bright overhead lights? Jarring. Cluttered nightstand? Mentally noisy. The wrong color palette? Your brain never fully powers down. But with just a few styling shifts and the right elements, you can create a space that literally supports your wellbeing — and looks damn good while doing it.

In this post, I’m breaking down my go-to design moves to create a sleep sanctuary:
✔️ What to invest in
✔️ What to ditch
✔️ And how to style a bedroom that’s not just pretty, but peaceful

Because your bedroom shouldn’t just look styled — it should feel like self-care.

Checklist: 7 Design Moves for a Better Night’s Sleep

  1. Ditch the Overhead Light
Opt for soft bedside lamps or sconces with dimmers. Warm, layered lighting calms your nervous system and sets the tone for rest. Plug-in sconces are extremely available right now if you don’t want to bring in an electrician.
  2. Choose a Calm Color Palette
Go for soft neutrals, dusty tones, or desaturated colors. Think: creamy whites, soft greys, muted sage, or warm blush.
  3. Upgrade Your Bedding
Invest in high-quality sheets, a cozy duvet, and breathable materials (hello, linen or bamboo). Your skin — and sleep cycle — will thank you. I can’t sleep without my Rest sheets and blanket – I even bring them when I travel now (and featured on my It-List of favorites!)
  4. Declutter Like You Mean It
A cluttered room = a cluttered mind. Keep surfaces minimal and intentional. Use baskets, trays, and stylish storage solutions to keep the calm. La Jolla is my absolute favorite.
  5. Layer Your Textiles
Add a throw, plush rug, and tactile pillows in calming textures. Texture adds warmth and makes the space feel cocooned — not cold.
  6. Black It Out
Add blackout curtains or layered window treatments. Light cues your brain to wake up — let’s not give it mixed signals.
  7. Scent the Space
Incorporate a diffuser or linen spray with lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood. Scent is a powerful way to train your body to relax.

Sleep isn’t a luxury — it’s a lifestyle. And your bedroom? It should be designed to support every dreamy, well-rested moment of it. Ready to stop just crashing in your space and start actually resting in it? Let’s style it out.
