Afraid of Color? Try This Approach Instead.

Scarlett J Designs is a a boutique Sarasota interior design studio delivering elevated interiors, bold brand styling, and curated special events for busy professionals and families who want impact without the overwhelm.

For years, I was afraid of color.

Like many people, I gravitated toward safe neutrals—creams, whites, beiges, and soft grays. They felt timeless, easy, and impossible to get wrong.

But after becoming a certified color consultant, I began to understand something important:

Color isn’t just decoration.
Color is emotional.

It can energize a room, calm a space, and even shift your mood the moment you walk through the door.

The good news? You don’t have to commit to painting every wall or buying a bright sofa to start enjoying color in your home.

If you love neutrals but want to experiment with color in a low-risk way, this approach is for you.

Think of It as “Color Sampling”

Instead of committing to a bold color palette right away, start small.

Think of it like sampling color throughout your home—adding touches that are inexpensive, easy to swap, and completely reversible.

This allows you to see how certain colors make you feel before committing to something permanent.

The goal is to introduce color in ways that feel intentional but flexible.

Start Small: Pillows, Throws, and Textiles

One of the easiest ways to introduce color is through soft goods.

Instead of starting with furniture (which can be expensive and difficult to change), try:

  • Throw pillows
  • Blankets and throws
  • A colorful blanket at the end of your bed
  • Patterned cushions

Even patterns introduce color, sometimes in subtle ways that feel layered and interesting rather than overwhelming.

Artwork Is One of the Easiest Ways to Add Color

Artwork is one of my favorite ways to experiment with color because it instantly changes the personality of a space.

A single colorful piece can introduce tones that ripple through the rest of the room.

Once you find a piece you love, you can echo those colors in smaller accents throughout the space.

Swap the Small Details

Color doesn’t always have to come from big design elements.

Sometimes the most impactful changes come from the smallest swaps.

Consider introducing color through:

  • Lamp shades
  • Kitchen towels
  • Bathroom towels
  • Decorative books
  • Table linens and placemats

These pieces are inexpensive, easy to rotate, and allow you to refresh a space seasonally.

Bring Color Into Everyday Moments

Your kitchen and dining areas are wonderful places to introduce color because they already involve objects you use daily.

Try incorporating:

  • Colorful dishes
  • Unique glassware
  • Patterned serving pieces
  • Bright mugs or bowls

These elements bring personality to your home without overwhelming the overall design.

Don’t Forget Seasonal Color

Seasonal decor is another fun way to experiment.

Think about:

  • Soft pastel tones for spring and Easter
  • Rich greens and reds during the holidays
  • Fresh flowers and greenery throughout the year

Seasonal touches allow you to enjoy color without committing to it permanently.

The Secret: Repeat the Color

One of the biggest mistakes people make when introducing color is adding it in just one place.

For color to feel intentional, it needs to appear more than once.

When a color is repeated throughout a room—or even throughout the home—the eye naturally follows it and the space feels cohesive.

For example, a blue in a piece of artwork might also appear in:

  • a pillow
  • a book on the coffee table
  • a patterned dish in the kitchen nearby

This repetition creates harmony.

Choose Colors That Actually Resonate With You

Not every color works for every person.

Some colors energize you.
Some calm you.
Some simply feel right.

As a Sarasota certified color consultant, one of the most important things I help clients determine is which colors resonate with them personally.

Color should never feel forced or trendy.

It should feel like you.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to abandon neutrals to enjoy color in your home.

Start small.
Experiment.
Layer color through details that are easy to change.

Over time, you’ll begin to understand which colors bring energy, joy, and comfort into your space.

And once you find those colors, you might discover you’re not afraid of color after all.

If you’re ready to explore color in your home but aren’t sure where to start, working with a certified color consultant can help you discover the palette that feels right for you.

Thoughtful color choices can transform a space—and how you feel in it.
